Overview of Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrels

The Thirteen-lined ground squirrel is much rarer in the UK than the Richardsons Ground Squirrel although the price is similar. Comparable in size to a rat, it has thirteen stripes across the back similar to a chipmunk. Unlike a chipmunk however, it has no striping to the face.

Thirteen-lined ground squirrels growl when angry, and can also make a whistling sound some have likened to bird song. They are very active creatures, so would benefit from a solid based large wheel to exercise in.

Diet and care requirements are similar to the Richardsons Ground Squirrels with them needing a large cage with room provided for burrowing opportunities.
